From the Author
I wanted to create a world where everyone of us could see the magic that is all around us. A world filled with marvelous and yet undiscovered places and beings. I wanted to help everyone see the magic that we've grown so accustomed to, that we completely ignore it.

Mark's Journey Into the Paranormal
By Becky Rhone-nowlan
The Guardian of Threshold by A.A. Volts is a very well written story. This is a paranormal adventure taken by 16 year old Mark. He is joined by his friends, who don't always understand but they help and support him anyway. There is an element of romance with the chemistry between Mark and his life-long friend Carla. Mr. Volts has written his characters true to life. You can really understand why Mark acts as he does and has the attitude he does. He blames himself for his mother's death and has allowed that to affect his relationship with his father. Many times supporting characters are written as background scenery, all the characters in this adventure feel very real. He has given them each a strong character and a big enough back story so that they also come to life for the reader.

Mark hasn't been able to get over the loss of his mother. He is sad and moody and feels no real joy in his life. He likens all the fun and happiness to a time when his mom was alive. He becomes aware of another presence in his life. Through his experience with this paranormal being he gets the idea that perhaps he might be able to see his mother again. He begins to research and explore possibilities. Through this process, he learns about astral projection. Mr. Volts writes about this interesting topic in a light and easily understood manner. In fact the whole story is an easy and fairly quick read.

Once Mark understands the process, he finds out that crossing into the realm of the undead is not that easy. Thanks to Phasma, the Guardian of the threshold. It's Phasma's job, along with her minions, to keep those from the living realm out. This causes some problems for Mark and his friends. Their journey takes them into danger as they face numerous challenges. Mark learns that the magic and mystical is not always what you might expect. Will Mark finally find a way to see his long dead mother or will Mark lose his life in the attempt?

This easy to read Mystical Adventure reminds me of Richard Matheson's writing style. For those unfamiliar with Mr. Matheson, he wrote "What Dreams May Come," among other stories. Since "What Dreams May Come" is one of my favorite stories, it takes a lot in a spiritually based story to impress me. Mr. Volts has done that with his well written, engaging characters. The story grabbed me from the beginning when Mark had to make a crash landing on a busy highway and it didn't let me go until the last page.

The plot is interesting and has plenty of action as well as underlying tension to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. This is billed as a "Young Adult Paranormal Fantasy" however; it will satisfy both young adults as well as adults. Sometimes "young Adult" stories are light on plot and have weak or one-dimensional characters. "The Guardian of Threshold" has a strong engaging plot and rich, fully developed characters. It was a pleasure to read and I don't believe you will be disappointed. One thing to remember, it is written in the American vernacular.

A great, all-ages read
By Thalia
All it took was two statements from the author in his dedication - yes, that's right, the dedication, that which comes before the story - to hook me:

"The sky is not the limit - there's no limit, and the possibilities are infinite and unimaginable"; and

"...there's more to life than meets the eye."

These give us a sneak preview into the mind of author A.A. Volts, whose ideologies it was apparent from the get-go, I both admire and share. Though I tend to indulge these philosophies through reading new-age titles by authors such as Doreen Virtue, Stuart Wilde and Eckhart Tolle (not so much fictional fantasy, more of the non-fictional spiritual genre), my interest was piqued enough to venture into Volts' world of the paranormal fantasy.

A change of pace is always nice, and this story did not disappoint. It follows 16-year-old Mark, who blames himself for the death of his beloved mother, into the world of the `Threshold' - a reality existing in another realm, where all souls come from and at some point, return. Mark dreams about entering this world in the hopes that he will once again be united with his mother, but soon discovers that crossing the Guardian of the Threshold is not such an easy or safe task.

What follows is his adventure into astral projection and the dangers that face those who chance crossing from the living realm into the realm of the living dead, for want of a better term.

Like Dan Millman and Paulo Coehlo, whose novels always allude to a deeper meaning than that which the words alone present, Volts' style, which blends fantasy with reality, left me wondering about the non-fictional elements of this fictional tale. Expertly written, it's this style which catches you and holds your attention from start to finish. And though it's targeted at the Young Adult market, its strong plot and realistic character profiles enable it to appeal to a much broader spectrum of readers.

Highly recommended; well-paced, enjoyable read at great value for money. Also, given the cover states `Threshold Series Book One', it appears we can look forward to the release of a second book in the series. The plot thickens!

Interesting concept
By Roberto Mattos
This is quite an interesting book, that will keep you hooked from the beginning. The author uses an idea that one's conscience can leave the physical body and travel to other realms. Based on this idea, his story develops when Mark, our hero, and his two best friends (Carla and Jonas) decided to test if the so called astral projection works and they decided to try it and do an experience to prove this theory. But what Mark really wants is to meet his dead mother once more. But during this trial, his best friend Jonas is captured by the Guardian of the Threshold, an evil entity that try to prevent non dead persons to enter into his realm. Now their only option is to go ahead trying to rescue him. And they happen to count with an unexpected help from someone in the Threshold. The story is written in a very fast path and it is guarantee that will keep you entertained for some hours. It took me around ten hour to read the whole book.
I recommend this book to the permanent library of any reader that is a fan of paranormal novels. I bought this book from amazon.com in its electronic version. Opinions expressed here are my own.
