Reading Genesis 1 Literally

David Guzik, in his "Verse by Verse Commentary on the Book of Genesis", does an excellent job in subscribing to a literal interpretation of Genesis. At a time, when theistic evolutionists along with progressive creationists and related biased groups tend to avoid interpreting Genesis literally so as to accommodate the long ages of the universe, this Commentary is a welcome addition to our understanding of Genesis literally, "that is, as straightforward and true according to its literary context". As such, one can confidently believe that Genesis 1 and 2 as historical narratives are "right and true"; that the Genesis 1 and 2 are historical "events that actually happened as described".
The universe and everything in it exists because the Creator God who created it all exists. As correctly stated by the Author, "The Bible tells us we can know God exists because of what we see in the created world. [i] The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth and their words to the ends of the world. [Psalms 19:1-4]. [ii] For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and godhead, so that they are without excuse'. [Romans 1:20]. This is an example of the teleological argument for the existence of God. It is the understanding that there must be a purposeful intelligence Who created this world, because the world shows both purpose and intelligence. In the view of many [including the author] this argument from purpose and design remains unanswered by the atheist or the agnostic".
"Genesis shows us the origins of the universe, order and complexity, the solar system, the atmosphere and hydrosphere, the origin of life, man, marriage, evil, language, government, culture, nature, religion". The question arises as to whether God created the primeval heavens and earth of Genesis 1:1 as perfect and complete or in a state of chaos as in Genesis 1:2. To believe God created primeval heavens and earth in a state of chaos is to invite a contradiction in our understanding of Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. There can be no contradiction, however, once we rightly divide/cut off the word of truth in Genesis 1:1 and separate it from the subsequent verse 1:2 in spite of any grammatical connection. Accordingly, we can convincingly believe the primeval heavens and earth of Genesis 1:1 were perfect adorned with life on earth. Proverbs 8:27-31 substantiates this interpretation of Genesis 1:1. Thus, Pre-Adamic life, including pre-Adamic 'sons of men', on earth is confirmed by Proverbs 8:22-31 and Lucifer's rule and subsequent sin on earth [and not in heaven, as assumed by some] is confirmed by Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:16.
Accordingly, we can be sure Genesis 1:2 describes the conditions on earth that cannot be considered as a product of the original perfect creation. It had to be a later consequence on earth brought about by sin. This means, prior to the chaotic conditions on earth as in Genesis 1:2, there had to be sin. Obviously, this sin had to be of Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:16). Before Adam sinned, Lucifer had already sinned. Now this cannot be sometime before Adam and Eve conceived after the creation week. Lucifer turned Satan was already present during the creation week as is symbolized by the subtle serpent (Genesis 3:1). The darkness in Genesis 1:2 symbolizes evil and death, characterized by the absence of life. Lucifer, once shining bright, became evil symbolized by the darkness in Genesis 1:2. Along with him those angels under his rule also sinned (Jude 6), next reserved to a judgment of the great day, kept under darkness now. "Based on these ideas, some have advanced what has been called the "Gap Theory". It is the idea that there was a long gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2" states the Author. The ideas, however, have their roots in the Bible. For details read In The Beginnings. Therefore, the existence of a pre-historical pre-Adamic life on earth prior to Genesis 1:3-31 cannot be ruled out. The assumption by the Author that "Whatever merit the Gap Theory may have, it cannot explain the extinction and fossilization of ancient animals. The Bible says plainly death came by Adam (Romans 5:12), and since fossils are the result of death, they could not have happened before Adam's time" is biblically untenable. The fact that Romans 5:12 plainly states death came by Adam doesn't mean death wasn't there prior to his sinning. Romans 5:12, talks about death that came by Adam after he sinned. And Adam being the federal head of all mankind, death has passed on to all men. In other words, sin and death that already existed earlier, symbolized by the darkness and barrenness on earth, next entered into the world of men that are now after Adam sinned. Lucifer and his angels along with pre-Adamic 'sons of men' the primeval earth of Genesis 1:1 sinned prior to creation of Adam and Eve[and not after, as taught by some]. And, as a consequence of their sin/s was the chaos on earth [Genesis 1:2] which should convincingly account for "the extinction and fossilization of ancient animals" evidenced by the Book of Stone and explained by the paleontologists.
Accordingly, the Gap Theory is not a mere human conjecture but is biblically-based. Space doesn't permit here to explain this biblical fact in all its verifying details. The reader is advised to read "BIBLICAL CREATION TRUTH" by this Reviewer and "The Gap Is Not A Theory!" by Jack Langford for details accounting for the gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:3 confirming the Gap Theory. The Gap Theory is definitely a biblical fact and not a mere theory as is taught by the traditional and modern Young Earth six-day creationists. As a matter of fact, the current debate about the origins and the age of the universe/earth precipitated by the position of Young Earth Creationists would be unnecessary if the Gap Theory interpretation was adopted. Anyway, the Bible has nothing to say about the age of the earth/universe; whether it's a young earth or old earth is spiritually irrelevant. But the fact of a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 is a biblical reality of profound theological and evangelical significance. This fact highlighted in BIBLICAL CREATION TRUTH has been somehow ignored or overlooked by the Young Earth Creationists and others. Traditional thinking somehow reigns supreme in the hearts of those who do not accept the Gap Theory,limiting thereby their growth in the knowledge of biblical truth concerning the origins and related biblical and geological facts!

Fantastic Book

This is a great book to get you thinking into the meaning of the stories in Genesis. It is a chapter by chapter, verse by verse commentary. I have read the Bible through many times but now I am going verse by verse with this book and then reading the same verses in the Bible. Highly recommend it.
