About the Author
Karl F. Hollenbach was born in 1925 in Louisville, KY, USA. He received his B.A and M.Ed. from the University of Louisville. His esoteric and metaphysical articles have been published in Japan and England as well as the United States. He and his artist wife live on Dunsinane Hill Farm near Fort Knox, Kentucky.

I got this as a gift. Being raised in a Catholic family and having majority of my education under Catholic administration, I thought that I've already had my fair share of the Gospels. But, despite my apprehension, I've decided to read the "Five Plays From the Gospels". In the beginning, I felt the book was being presented in a traditional and formal manner; in which characters were always addressed by their first names when spoken to. I was a bit turned off by this. But, then again, the Catholic girl in me decided to push through reading the book until the end. Needless to say, I made the right choice.
The message of the Five Plays is beyond the book's title or the manner it was written. Upon continuous reading, I found the story of Jesus' much more interesting. In fact, anyone not familiar with the Gospels might be persuaded to learn more about the story of Jesus. Credit this to the trivial facts mentioned by the narrator.
In my opinion the message of the Five Plays from the Gospels is:
Our souls are saved because of God's unconditional love for us. We are not our bodies. We are our souls. And because of God's undying love, our souls are made eternal.

New Take on an Old Tale

Though I am not a religious person I opted to read this book and to be honest it is a good read, regardless of the religious overtones. The characters are written as endearing and so realistic. The age old tales are there, linked to the events chronicled in the Bible, but told from a new light. It was an interesting choice to re-write these stories as plays and interestingly enough it works. My only qualm was that the individual plays seemed a bit short and would be better with a little more meat on the bones, so to speak. But, overall a decent read for believers and non-believers alike.

Religious and inspiring stories with a twist!

I personally don't delve into religious stuff too much - nothing against it but just a preference however I wanted to end my 2012 with something to appreciate our Saviour which is why I decided to read Five Plays from the Gospels and reading is was indeed amazing.
Five Plays from the Gospels are stories from the Bible that some of us are or may not be familiar with however Hollenbach presented it in his own style and twist through plays. If you are not familiar with the story then this is a great start for you however if you know the story then five Plays from the Gospel will give you a different light and take to these familiar and inspiring stories. I appreciate the style because it can easily be read, since some people do find the stories in the Bible boring. The manner it was lightly written yet the religious overtones and message is so clear and vivid.
Hollenbach has taken age old stories from an important book and made it intriguing and "new". It makes a readers reading experience worthwhile.
