Review
This has got to be one of the bravest books I have encountered in years. (Owen Sound Sun-Times)

...there are many lessons that can be learned from Carol's very personal and revealing autobiography. This is, after all, a story of victory of one woman against abuse and oppression, a victory which should be celebrated. And it is a cautionary tale for those who might be attracted to splinter groups. (Association of Mormon Letters)

About the Author
John Christie was a widower for several years when he met Carol in the fall of 2008. A fourth-generation Owen Sounder and former city councillor, he has worked in media, ministry, and public transportation. Now semi-retired, he remains active as a broadcaster.

Carol Christie lived an abusive and polygamous life for close to 40 years and escaped the church cult in 2008. She is determined to put an end to the cult's power and help its survivors, is now happily (and legally) married to John Christie, and lives in Owen Sound, Ontario.

How Polygamy Really Works
By kdeeig
I highly recommend Ms. Christie's book, especially for human rights activists, anti-polygamy activists, lawyers and therapists who treat women and children who are leaving polygamy.

I enjoyed this book for several reasons, if it is alright to say one enjoys reading about the horrible and perverted abuses of someone's human rights. Ms. Christie, like every survivor of American polygamy has important things to convey about this human rights abuse, which is now being popularly bandied about as a "lifestyle choice" on so-called reality TV, and championed by columnists for the Huffington Post and other liberal publications.

As an anti-polygamy activist and feminist, I have heard dozens and dozens of these stories from the women and children lucky enough to finally escape polygamy. While Ms. Christie shares her story, which has so much in common with other survivors, she does several important things that I think maybe even she is unaware she has done.

First it is clear from the very beginning that although Ms. Christie supposedly made this choice for herself, she didn't. Not only was her mother's religious fanaticism central to coercing her into a life of polygamy but other women within the cult played essential parts in her coercion. Polygamy cannot work without coercion!

The details of the horrific abuse Ms. Christie suffered in a polygamous cult are sandwiched in between what I believe are the two most important messages of the entire book. The beginning, before she really starts to reveal her story, where she expresses gratitude for both a good therapist and a good attorney [every woman exiting polygamy should have both], and the end, when she finally gets mad.

Polygamy depends on its victims never getting mad. I have known dozens of escaped women and it is a theme. Even once they are out, they can spend years rambling on about how they forgive everyone and have no anger, because "it's the right thing to do," and will do almost anything to avoid becoming angry. What they rarely, if ever, realize is that only by finally getting angry will anything ever change.

Thank you, Ms. Christie, for finally getting angry!

sad, but intriguing
By Ionia Froment
With the popularity of "Sister Wives" and other related media, I think this subject has seen more light than it ever has. I was curious to read this book and find out more about the life of this woman and what she survived.

The book opens in an interesting way, with the author sharing her feelings on her experiences and offering advice to others who may be in a situation that is making them uncomfortable or holding them back. I liked the positive start, especially for a book that dealt with such sorrow and dark subject matter.

The first half of this memoir should not be discounted as it tells the story of a woman who spent much of her life obeying the demands of others. The abuse is terrible, at times difficult to read and there are some places where I felt the subjects were not fully explored, but in this case, I was glad. The acts of the "prophets" throughout this narrative make you internally cringe and feel surges of anger at the same time. Still, it was the latter half of the book that impressed me.

There have been a lot of autobiographical memoirs published and many of them tell stories of overcoming great adversity to reach a goal or start a new life, but this one was very heartfelt and I couldn't help but root for this woman to live the rest of her life free of her confines. It was the second half of this book that really made me feel something in my core, and gave me respect for the author and her husband. She has chosen to come forward with her story to enlighten her readers about the truth of what she lived through and to try to prevent the same thing from happening to others.

The author's voice was very honest, and the writing was concise and easy to read. I was in some ways surprised to find that this was a first book.

Overall, this is not a light and pleasant read, but I felt it was a worthy read. I appreciate the trauma the author must have suffered and applaud her for coming forward with her story. If you wish to know more about this subject, this book is a good place to begin.

95% of Polygamy is Religiously Forced Programming -- It's NOT a Free Will Choice!
By Kristyn Decker
After reading Carol Christie's book "The Church Wife," about her tortuous life in patriarchal polygamy, and then learning about the 3 young women kidnapped 10 years previous in Cleveland, Ohio, it's haunting to think you and I could possibly be living right next door, working with, friends with, purchasing from, and associating with a pedophile, rapist, horrifying abuser... who also has a list of victims. Just like Carol's ex-husband and his son, who she was forced to marry, and Areil Castro, who kidnapped those young girls, most terrorists who maltreat people have a completely different public persona. There are way too many men who use religious doctrine to justify their evil behaviors.

People are often in shock when their son, best friend, someone they know, or nephew are arrested or found guilty for such crimes. "Oh no; he couldn't do that, he is such a kind man. He always offers to help everyone. We never expected him to ever do something like that..." Because these things go on all around us, our lack of alertness and suspicion, as well as the absent laws that protect victims, is frightening.

That's what people said about Carol Christie's husbands. Yet, she, her two sons and many other victims lived a life of physical, spiritual and emotional abuse because of them. In the midst of the public, their work-places, while shopping, and among the town's people. On the outside, there just wasn't enough suspicion and alertness to help stop these victims from severe violations and brainwashing. They were terrorized, beaten and threatened with hell and of being murdered if they ever left or told anyone what was going on inside their commune. From the outside, (as is common in polygamous families,)everything and everyone appeared to be normal and happy. When a policeman once stopped by because one brave, wonderful soul dared notice and report something very suspicious, he listened to her "charismatic" pedophile, husband persuade them with smiles and lies that everything was just fine. He didn't ask to look inside, thus leaving Carol's child-sister-wives, Carol and their children to suffer more years of wrath.

In all fairness, coming from someone else who was born, raised and lived polygamy before I found my freedom--Carol's story is sadly, very real. It depicts not only violence, but how the "teachings" of patriarchal polygamy were harmful to her and her sister-wives. 95 percent of polygamy across the world is religious coercive brainwashing. Even if you put fanatical, religious cults, and zealots who claim godhood, aside; women and children suffer in polygamy for many more reasons. First and foremost, they've all been programmed to believe they'll go to hell and lose absolutely everything; including their families and children if they don't comply with their husband's having multiple sexual partners,(which they do not have a right to) and if they ever leave.

"The Church Wife" is yet another heart rendering reality check of literally thousands of women, teens and children who have been and are still (as Carol's oldest son is still) being brainwashed to believe in the cohesive rules of patriarchal polygamy - which is religiously forced dogma -- it's not a free will choice!
