About the Author
The Pizza Pilgrims is the new street-food venture from Thom and James Elliott, bringing true Italian pizza back to London. The brothers serve authentic Neapolitan pizzas from the back of a traditional oven installed in their iconic, three-wheeled Piaggio Ape van. In order to learn the secrets of great pizza, and also to collect their beloved van from the southernmost tip of Italy, they set off on a culinary road trip. Driving at a top speed of 40 mph they travelled the length of the country, eating all the way and covering over 2,500 miles back to London. This has allowed them to meet some of the great characters and chefs that make Italian food what it is today, and see exactly what is required of them in their quest to become Masters of The Dough!

Wonderful

I have reviewed many cookbooks for the Amazon Vine programme. Some have been very good, others reasonable and most have been unusable and dire. This book falls into the very good category, its full of beautiful photos with many wonderful and tasty dishes. This is a great book for those wanting to cook rustic, original Italian food.

The book represents the journey of two English friends collating recipes from a trip around Italy for use in their London eatery. What they bring to this book are great, sometimes unusual recipes for so many different Italian dishes. The book even looks at preparing chillies and home-made Limoncello. The authors also look at how to create wonderful Pizza's but it so much more than a pizza recipe book.

Having lived for extended periods of time in Foggia, Puglia, Southern Italy and have experienced many different home made and restaurant bought dishes, which are not found outside of the Puglia area of Italy, I found this book refreshing and enlightening. Travelling around the country, you soon realise that the Italian food we eat in the UK is a far cry from that found on the streets of Italy. This book tries to bring those types of dishes to a wider audience. I adore Italian food and I adore this quirky well written cookbook.

Good read, Great pizza

Having tried their pizza in soho a few times, i couldn't wait to see if i could replicate it at home. Whilst my efforts weren't quite up to their standards, the book is a good read with some really interesting recipes!

Good book with interesting recipes

Gives you all the basics to get started making pizza and other Italian dishes. While definitely a product of the UK, the recipes are written so that anyone with a scale (yes, many recipe ingredients are described by weight and not volume) can follow and prepare them. There is also a section on building your own Cobb oven using materials such as clay, straw, and firebricks. It is well written and the photos are helpful.

The only negative I can offer is that the pizza dough recipe, when followed to the letter, produces a few too many dough balls to be consumed in a single sitting. Also, the method for cooking pizza may work in the Cobb oven, but when using the broiler setting on a gas oven, the pizzas come out a little too wet or too burned. I suggest using a dryer style of mozzarella (not buffalo mozzarella swimming in brine) and cutting the amount of dough used for each pizza in half (experiment to your own taste here).

Overall, this is a very good book on pizza and other Italian fare.
