Poorly-written and full of inexcusable mistakes

There is no excuse for the incredible laziness of the author regarding historical fact about the subjects in this poorly-written book. Humphrey Bogart gave a short remembrance of Jack Carson upon Carson's death? Bogart died almost six years to the day BEFORE Carson, who died in 1963, not 1965, as the author alleges. There are so many mistakes, such lack of research, in this book that let's hope the author made very little money from it. The author is 90, so I have refrained from contacting him personally. Please, Mr. Foster, retire once and for all.

What is the CEB?

The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

A key goal of the CEB translation team is to make the Bible accessible to a broad range of people; it’s written at a comfortable level for over half of all English readers. As the translators do their work, reading specialists from more than a dozen denominations review the texts to ensure a smooth and natural reading experience. Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time.

Who Is It For?

The Common English Bible is committed to the whole church of Jesus Christ. To achieve this, the CEB represents the work of a diverse team with broad scholarship, including the work of over one hundred and fifteen scholars—men and women from twenty-two faith traditions in American, African, Asian, European and Latino communities. As a result, the English translation of ancient words has an uncommon relevance for a broad audience of Bible readers—from children to scholars.

Who Sponsored the Common English Bible?

The Common English Bible is a distinct new imprint and brand for Bibles and reference products about the Bible. Publishing and marketing offices are located in Nashville, Tennessee. The CEB translation was funded by the Church Resources Development Corp, which allows for cooperation among denominational publishers in the development and distribution of Bibles, curriculum, and worship materials. The Common English Bible Committee meets periodically and consists of denominational publishers from the following denominations: Disciples of Christ (Chalice Press); Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (Westminster John Knox Press); Episcopal Church (Church Publishing Inc); United Churches of Christ (Pilgrim Press), and United Methodist Church (Abingdon Press).

Not Perfect, But Very Good for Expanded Old Testament

Overall, if you want a modern English easy-to-read bible with the complete canon of Apocrypha used by Orthodox, Roman Catholics, and Anglicans, that was crafted by an ecumenical group of scholars, then this is the bible for you!

As a Greek Orthodox Christian I'm always looking out for bibles that contain our complete canon of the Old Testament (since it comes from the pre-Christian era Septuagint translation which was most heavily used by the NT authors), which includes what Protestants refer to as the Apocrypha and Roman Catholics as Deutero-canonical books. Thankfully, this version has all the books used by the Greek and Slavonic Churches. So it has all of the books used by Roman Catholics (e.g., Tobit thru 2nd Maccabees). It has all those in Anglican bibles but not in RC bibles: e.g, 1st & 2nd Esdras and the Prayer of Manasseh (that RCs consider "apocrypha" but not deutero-canoncial). And it has all those in Orthodox bibles but in neither RC or Anglican ones: e.g., Psalm 151, in 3 versions, and 3rd & 4th Maccabees). Thus, this is a truly ecumenical bible that can be used by all Christians. Unfortunately, while there were 12 Roman Catholics and 19 Anglicans/Episcopalians on the various translating committees, there were no Orthodox of any jurisdiction.

When analyzing this specific edition of the CEB, "with Apocryhpa", I'm looking mainly at things not directly tied to the translation itself. The translation is what it is and anyone buying a bible should spend some time reading portions to see if they like what they are reading. Key to keep in mind here is that this is written at the 7th grade level. So it is easier to read than say the NRSV or ESV (both with complete Apocrypha editions), which are at about the 11th grade level. This may explain why they adopted the controversial "Human One" for "Son of Man" and other more idiosyncratic word choices. But those just are what they are. One must also keep in mind that the CEB is being officially published by 5 of the major "liberal" mainline Protestant Churches' denominational publishing houses in the USA: Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and United Methodist. The ELCA's publishing house did not join, though 5 Lutherans were on the overall translation committees.

Some specific observations on this edition:

- The table of contents at the front of the bible makes no mention of the Apocrypha. The table of contents for that is buried in the book after the OT, after page 906.
- The Apocrypha is placed between the OT and NT, not after the NT (like ESV w/Apoc).
- There is no dedicated preface or introduction to the Apocrypha specifically, nor any general discussion about how various Christians have viewed it throughout history or how Orthodox, Roman Catholics, and Protestants have handled printing it in their bibles.
- It does indicate that the translations of the Apocrypha from the Book of Daniel (e.g., Susanna) are from Theodotion's later edition. Too bad they didn't include a complete Greek Daniel from the pre-Theodotion Septuagint.
- In the general preface up front, there is just a short paragraph discussion about how their translators handled the text and translation of the Apocrypha.
- Each portion--OT, Apoc, NT--is paginated seperately. So OT is 1-906, Apocrypha is 1-279, and NT is 1-283.
- The abbreviations, terms, measures and Hebrew calendar are immediately after the table of contents at the front of the book while the 8 maps are at the very back.

It is interesting that the editor of the CEB Apocrypha section, David A. de Silvio (UMC), is one of the three scholars responsible for the ESV's Apocrypha (Oxford University Press).

So count me as a solid 4.5 rating! It came oh so close. I probably would've given this a 5 rating if all that was specific to this edition, that is tied to the Apocypha, had been given more emphasis and explanation, as it is in the ESV w/Apoc. How hard is it to include in the table of contents up front? Or have a good introduction to the complexities tied to both the inclusion and printing of same? But at least they put it after the OT and not after the NT.

If you use the Apocrypha regularly, this is a great choice, but one that should be supplemented with the ESV w/Apoc or RSV/NRSV w/Apoc, esp. a study edition.

Great translation, easy navigation!

I am very excited that the Common English Bible is now available with both Old and New Testaments (and Apocrypha) and with a working table of contents! Just today one of my members said he wanted to read the Bible but was struggling with it because he didn't understand it. I'm ordering a hard copy of this Bible for him today, and a Kindle version for myself. I appreciate the editors solving the navigation issue for the Kindle version.
