Teamwork crushes the bully

A story I read as a child soon after it was written in 1945. I found the book in our basement, and have now introduced my grandson to it. It has all the features of a classic: small hero with a huge heart and much courage, meets another outcast. Together, they gather courage and challenge the bully of the forest...and THEY WIN!!! The bully has a great name (Thunderclap) and the names of the two heroes and not shabby either: Morris and Balsam. I must have enjoyed it as a kid because I remembered it all these years and now my grandson is enthralled. I don't think it is available anywhere. Pity.

Book Three, More Charm!

The "Brides of Beckham" series is getting to be more fun to read as each book is written. Susan is the Beckham, Massachusetts bride in this story. A young 18 year old, the oldest in a family of 12, 8 of which are outright hellions, she decides she wants out of her current life and that it is time for her to marry, have a husband and home of her own, with her own children that she can control and discipline her own way. She contacts the mail order business of Harriett Long to find a husband. I must say that the character of Harriett Long is getting more interesting and mysterious with each book!. Susan chooses Jesse Dailey, a single journalist in Ft. Worth, Texas. After a long 10 day train ride, she arrives in Ft. Worth tired and dirty, smelling like vomit from the 2 year old that latched onto her on the train trip. She is beginning to feel like a child magnant! She then is shocked and bewildered to be met instead by Jesse's brother David, who informs her that Jesse was killed while investigating a murder in Ft. Worth. But the shock and confusion doesn't end there. David, a widower, asks Susan to marry him in Jesse's place. Susan, now left in Fort Worth with no money decides to marry David. But what David fails to tell Susan is that he has 4 little male hellions of his own. That is when the story gets really interesting! Mail Order Madness is a sweet little treat. Readers who enjoy mail order bride romances should definitely put The "Brides of Beckham" series at the top of their wish list!

More About the Boys Than the Romance

This was an entertaining little novella. But, while it is well written and has a nice plot, it is lacking in the romance department. IMO, the story got bogged down with Susan's efforts in disciplining the children, and unfortunately, the romance got lost in the shuffle. Susan is one of twelve children, who are known in their community as the "demon horde!" Susan, as the eldest at 18, has been has been helping her parents take care of her siblings since she was a very young child. Susan's parents were strict with their first four children, but then after that they got tired and just kinda gave up. As a result, the younger eight Miller offspring are little terrors. Susan has had it with children. She so badly wants to escape that she answers an ad to become a mail order bride. Susan's only requirement for a husband is that he not have any children. She figures if God "curses" her with any children of her own she will raise them with "a long switch!" Lol. Susan answers Jesse's letter and heads to Texas to marry him. Jesse is 23, has no children, and has never been married. Unfortunately, before she arrives Jesse is murdered. Susan is met at the train station by David, the hero and Jesse's older brother, who gives her the bad news. He asks Susan to marry him instead. David is in desperate need of a wife. He is a widow with four boys and needs help raising his children. Unfortunately, David's boys are hellions, and no woman who knows them wants to marry him and take on his boys. Susan is hesitant about marrying a man with children, but agrees to meet the boys before making a decision. Susan meets the boys. They are extremely well behaved, so she decides to marry David. Unknown to Susan, David had bribed the boys with money so they would be on their best behavior when they met Susan so as not to put her off marrying him. Within minutes of their getting married all hell breaks loose, and Susan realizes that she has signed on for her worst nightmare. From there the story develops. Unfortunately, the focus is more in Susan's efforts to get the boys to behave rather than on the budding relationship between her and David. Furthermore, I found David to be somewhat of a timid man. He was easily intimidated by Susan whenever she was angry...which was quite a bit all things considered. All in all I didn't find him to be the strong, sexy, cowboy type of hero that I enjoy. This book was an ok read. Entertaining, but nothing special.

Child rearing 101

Mail Order Madness (Brides of Beckham)is the third in the Brides of Beckham series. I read them somewhat out of order. However, this only compliments the series as I normally do not like to read "backwards". And I had read the second first, then the first and now the third.

As with the second book, Mail Order Mama (Brides of Beckham), I enjoyed the culture clash somehow. Only this time it was not East versus West, shy versus boisterous but child rearing.

Susan, the heroine, is desperate to leave her small family farm with her eleven younger siblings behind. For as long as she remembers, she is babysitting, cooking, sawing and cleaning. While she and her next three siblings were raised very strict and had felt switch when they misbehaved, she realizes that her parents were just simply tired after four kids and the seven that followed were allowed to run wild.

David, the hero, grew up somewhat privileged and inherited the family ranch. His wife died after giving birth to twins. He has been a widower with 4 "hellion" boys for a year, unable to hold on to a nanny, when his younger brother tells him that he has sent for a mail order bride. His brother is rather independent and is saving up to buy his own ranch, not wanting to have the ranch the brother grew up, split in half. Therefore he had asked for a simply young woman who would help him save his funds towards that goal.

Susan had deliberately picked Jess as her groom as he has no children. She loves children but has clear ideas on how to raise them and how she expects them to behave. Jess is a newspaper man (reporter) and is killed on assignment while Susan is on her way to Texas to marry. David, who had considered sending for a mail order bride himself, one who would not know how is boys were regarded in the community, offers for Susan himself.

The rest of the books is about how Susan gets the boys to behave, leaving her methods - a good smack on the bottom - behind as per David's orders (and he is quite firm in those) and using ingenuity to outsmart the little boys and getting them to behave.

There is not a whole lot of romance, kind of difficult with 4 kids under the age of 8 around at all times but the author does manage to show the growing awareness in David that Susan is what the children need even when at times he clueless undermines her.

As I said in my review of Mail Order Mayhem (Brides of Beckham), I hope the author will write the story of Harriet Long, the owner of the match making agency the brides of Beckham use. I believe, her story could be the most interesting one.

Then we follow them on to Nauvoo, where the Kingdom rose again on the Mississippi River, work for the dead was introduced, and the law of celestial marriage was revealed. Again, persecution raised its ugly head, ending in the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith at Carthage. In all, it covers 11 years of Church History, and covers sections 100-135 of the Doctrine and Covenants. The cover features “Brother Joseph,” a beautiful portrait of the Prophet Joseph Smith, by David Lindsley.

Comparing versions, editions & printings...

5 stars for Dynamic Anatomy's 1990 printing- 1 star for this '09 printing.

- There are now 3 distinct versions...
- The Original Edition, created in 1958, reprinted here in 2009.
- The Original Version, 1990 printing. Featuring better production values.
- The Revised & Expanded Edition. Released in 2003 with fascinating color.

This is *extremely* frustrating- the only version I really recommend is the only version that's currently out of print. I'm a *huge* fan of Dynamic Anatomy's 1st-ever paperback edition released in 1990 by Watson-Guptill. Unfortunately, this '09 Dover printing is a nearly exact reprint of the original edition in '58. This is really too bad, since the 1990 printing made a few *significant* improvements. These would include brighter, whiter paper; better printing & image quality (probably due to that paper); and a new, yellowish-brown (bronze) enhancement to the original reddish-brown drawings of the '58 edition. Since Hogarth was still alive in 1990 (he passed away in '96), it's safe to assume these better production values were very much to his liking. I highly recommend the 1990 printing to everyone. Why would anyone want the inferior '58 printing? The only reason I could recommend getting this Dover reprint is if people want to see what Dynamic Anatomy *really* looked like back when it was first released.

One of two favorite manuals for figure drawing. While the other two reviews (at the time I'm posting this) reveal some considerable division over the quality of this edition, I can say for myself that Hogarth taught me how to draw the human figure. I prefer the styling of Loomis' Figure Drawing for All It's Worth, and for arranging the figure in space I feel his approach is probably better, but for the details of anatomy, and how the pieces relate to one another, this work can't be beat. And the old version is just fine. When you can get a copy of this for one fifth the cost of the other version (Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and Expanded Edition), it doesn't make financial sense to spring for colored plates, even if they are beautiful. Either will teach you to draw, which should be the point.

Get one, draw from it, and have fun.

Hogarth's book rightfully belongs on every artist's shelf, next to Bridgman and Loomis. There's a reason why artists have been turning to this book for decades.
