About the Author
EUGENE H. PETERSON is a writer, poet, and retired pastor. He has authored more than thirty-four books (not including The Message). He is Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eugene also founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he ministered for twenty-nine years. After teaching at a seminary, he created The Message, a vibrant Bible paraphrase that connects with today's readers like no other.

It took Peterson ten years to complete. He worked not from any English text but from the original Hebrew and Greek texts to guarantee authenticity. At the same time, his ear was always tuned to the cadence and energy of the English spoken every day on the streets. He lives with his wife, Jan, in Montana.

A fresh approach to reading scripture...

...that opens the familiar and the old up in new ways.

I have the original study Bible, "Conversations". I purchased four of these Bibles to give to four young girls going through confirmation at my church. I looked through them and compared them to mine, they are very close. I love this Bible. I appreciate Peterson's introduction to each book, his reflections and notes interspersed throughout, his prayers...

This would not be my only Bible, but I never study without it close by.

Besides the content, the book itself is attractive and it holds up to a lot of handling.

My Favorite Bible

This Bible is the most understandable and easiest to read I have ever used. The cover and binding allow it to stay open to your place without creasing. Peterson's notes and commentaries are most edifying. He also begins each book of the Bible with an appropriate tutorial.

In between, Chris Offutt's broke, lonely, or just plain down-on-their-luck characters find out exactly how difficult it is to go home again, and how equally difficult it is to stop wishing they could. The same might be said of all Offutt's Appalachian transplants, from the small-town sheriff of "Melungeons," forever marked by the violence and beauty of his mountain upbringing, to the rootless ex-con of "Moscow, Idaho," who wonders "if he'd ever find a woman, a job he liked, or a town he wanted to stay in." Missing Kentucky, even when one lives there, is the emotional linchpin of the nine spare and stunning stories in this second collection by Offutt (Kentucky Straight; The Good Brother). Many of the entries previously appeared in magazines such as Esquire and Granta; "Melungeons" has been included in Best American Short Stories 1994. All deal with the magnetic pull of the Kentucky hills on those born there, and while a common theme enriches the cyclical nature of the collection, its repetitiveness sometimes makes one wish for a change of focus. Some narratives are straightforward: in "Darla," the eponymous protagonist returns to the hills after 30 years in Ohio, realizing that's where she belongs only after a real estate agent presses her to sell out. Other tales are more intricate. A Kentucky trucker washes up in an Oregon flood in "High Water Everywhere," then decides to go back to the hills after encountering a deputy sheriff who has resisted the impulse to leave his native turf because he knows everybody's intimate lives, and "the knowing keeps me here." "Two-Eleven All Around" plumbs a well of dark humor when the divorced narrator discovers "you raise someone else's [kids] while a stranger takes care of yours." From the protagonist of "Out of the Woods," who's never left his Kentucky county before, to the narrator of "Tough People," who learns in Montana that he's ruined for going back, the stories all resonate with isolation and lawlessness born in the Kentucky hills. Offutt's characters may leave the woods?that is, rural eastern Kentucky?but it doesn't leave them. Some have escaped to town or gone west, others have returned after trying to live elsewhere. Offutt's writing is as simple and straightforward as his characters, who are not angst-ridden or introspective but often use sex, alcohol, or violence to get through the day. Despite these similarities, there is great variety in plot. In "Moscow, Idaho" two ex-cons move graves to make room for a new highway. "Darla" tells of an elderly woman returning to her home on her own terms. Disparate characters are brought together during a flood in "High Water Everywhere." Because I love short stories and Southern writers, I discovered Chris Offutt. Out of the Woods was his first book I read. It won't be the last. His fiction is serious, his characters haunting. Haunting because of the writer's honesty. Offutt turns on the overhead light and throws off the sheet. His protagonist in "Two-Eleven All Around" sums up all of his characters when he ponders, "Sometimes I don't think I've done anything to leave my mark in this world. I'm the kind of person the world leaves a mark on." Offutt has left his mark.

High Praise for Chris Offutt

Presently you won't see Chris Offutt's name on any bestseller's list, but please don't let that discourage you from reading his wonderful work. In "Out of the Woods," Offutt follows the lives of ex-cons, alcoholics, gamblers, and drifters as they struggle to find direction and purpose.
Offutt's characters share one common thread, they were all born and raised in Appalachian communities in Kentucky. Reared in a culture in and of itself, these Kentuckians face harsh realities as they try to carve out a path for themselves in mainstream America. Most grapple with a strong desire to get out and see the world yet simultaneously they fight the urge to return to the comfort and security of home. In "Moscow, Idaho," a young prisoner on grave digging duty aims to turn over a new leaf and wonders if he will ever find a woman, a good job, and a town to settle in. "Two-Eleven All Around" is the story of a man who is so desperate for attention from his girlfriend, that he stages his own arrest in hope that she will hear about it while listening to her radio. These tales combine perseverance and heartbreak into poetic prose.
There have been comparisons of Offutt's writing to that of Raymond Carver's. Only in my opinion, Offutt is better. Carver's characters tend to present with a flat affect, but Offutt is able to take the reader subtly and deeply into his characters minds. Chris Offutt excels at what he writes about because he lived the life of his characters. He grew up in a small Appalachian community and at the age of nineteen he meandered across the country where he went through more than fifty jobs before returning to home and raising a family. Chris Offutt has come full circle and there is no doubt that he will find himself a place in the world of literature.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was a British statesman, soldier, and writer. A graduate of Sandhurst, he fought in India, the Sudan, and South Africa. In 1900 he was elected to Parliament. Churchill was the first lord of the admiralty (1911-1915) in World War I until disgraced by the failure of the Dardanelles campaign, which he had advocated. He afterwards served in numerous cabinet positions in the Liberal government of Lloyd George. A Conservative after 1924, he was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1924 to 1929; his revaluation of the pound was a component leading to the general strike of 1926. Not in office from 1929 to 1939, Churchill broadcast ignored warnings of the danger of Nazi Germany. In 1940, seven months after the outbreak of World War II, he succeeded Neville Chamberlain as prime minister. His rousing oratory, his vigor, and his refusal to make peace with Hitler were critical to sustaining British resistance from 1940 to 1942. Before the United States entrance’ into the war, he met President Franklin D. Roosevelt at sea for crucial talks. He twice addressed the American Congress, twice went to Moscow, and attended a series of international conferences, including the Yalta Conference. Following the postwar Labour victory in 1945, he became leader of the opposition. In 1951 he was once more elected prime minister; he was knighted in 1953 and retired in 1955. Winston Churchill was the author of many histories, biographies, and memoirs, and in 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.

Great

Winston Churchill is one of my favorite people in history. I read everything I can get my hands on about him. I had not realized there were so many quotes by Churchill until I read this book. Here are a couple of my favorites. "The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may divide it, but in the end; there it is". As a lover of books I really enjoyed this one. "Writing a book is an adventure to begin with, it is a toy and an amusement; then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling it out to the public". And lastly, "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life". There are so many great quotes in the book it will keep you constant occupied with it. Now if I can just work some of the quotes into my everyday speaking and writing I will sound well read. I read this as an e-book on my Kindle app on my Ipad.

Winston on the Prowl!!

Being a devout Churchillian, I always regarded Winston Churchill as the ultimate wordsmith of the English language. His use of words is really without parallel and shows a thought provoking mind which is compassionate and in possession of humor. His observations contain common sense and make one want to shake one’s head in affirmation as to a simple observation which every human knows but does not know how to convey to others.
This book compiled by Jim Dell is done with quotations in alphabetical order. Of course I have my favorites which I will list below:
1. You Sir are drunk! (As quoted of Member of Parliament Bessie Braddock) And in reply Winston stated “And you madam, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning.
2. This quote is one I never heard of before but is true and makes one think. “Christopher Columbus was the first socialist: he didn’t know where he was—and he did it all at taxpayers’ expense.”
3. “Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”
4. “I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”
5. “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.”
6. “I want no criticism of America at my table. The Americans criticize themselves more than enough.”
7. “I you are going through hell, keep going.”
8. “Never give in – never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”
9. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
10. “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Great book for reading and reference for all to read. Good for any library!!

What a great idea!

This is a great idea for learning nouns (and supporting words) while trying to learn a new language. It was a nice read during my lunch break and now I know several more words than I knew before. I am excited about reading the rest of this series.

Very engaging

I have to agree with the description - this book is more engaging than flashcards, textbooks and the like. I find flashcards quickly become a chore and I can't stick with them. However, this immersion reading format is more fun. It also gives the words some context which is often lacking in textbook exercises. I look forward to reading more of these books.

This would have been such a wonderful informative material to have if it wasn't only presented in a digital format that can be loaded from a web page. We need this in paperback form. Lots and lots of scales

I mean lots of them, good fun to experiment with.

The only flaw of this Kindle book is the layout, it's not good, I've tried changing margins, font sizes, but I still can't get everything to line up correctly, so it looks nothing like it shows on the authours webpage.
