A Mediocre Story by a Visionary

There are some interesting ideas in this book, especially if you consider when it was written. But as far as story goes, it's actually pretty bad. I enjoyed it enough, and I guess that's what matters, but it definitely lacks almost everything that makes for good storytelling. Reminds me a little bit of a Philip K. Dick short story; it uses groundbreaking ideas to get things going but the characters, setting, and plot are about as stale as they come. I'm glad I read it, but don't expect too much aside from being fascinated that someone thought this up in 1895.

Great story

I love this story! It really makes you think you know. I also love how he talks about science making it a really good science fiction. There isn't much in the way of characterization and there's not to much detail, just enough for you too fill in the blanks with your imagination. And the action in the story is good too. This edition is perfect to bring on a trip because it's very compact and light.

Haha well I was watching Star Trek Season 3: EP 21, "The CLoud Minders". I decided to write a review about the troglodytes. Maybe there is also a unseen gas that causes them to behave so barbarically. This is a classic and is a must read if you love sci-fi. Please read Jules Verne's as well. I enjoy reading 20,000 leagues under the sea after the "TIME MACHINE"

Hysterically Funny!

A friend of mine had this book sitting on her coffee table and I opened it up and couldn't put it down. This is one of the funniest parodies I've seen in years. I was laughing out loud from beginning to end. Just when I thought I had the whole thing figured out, Carpenter would come up with another unexpected and delightfully amusing twist. I've bought four and am giving them as Valentine's gifts. Even my mother (married for 50 years!) loves it. Does anyone know who Rachel Carpenter is? Has she written other stuff? I searched her name on amazon and couldn't find other books but I'd sure love to read a novel if she's got one. Wow!

Even if you're not single, there is remarkable charm and understanding in this little book about being a woman in what is STILL a remarkably marriage-obsessed society. It is a pleasure and a comfort to take part in poking fun of this reality. As ever, Author Rachel Carpenter's intellectual, dry wit comes through even in the context of the whimsical simplicity of the book. Anyone--male or female--who has ever actively looked for a life partner and consistently failed at doing so (in other words, everyone, right?) will gobble up these modern words of wisdom.

It's good to laugh at yourself

Whether you are happily married (like me) or still looking (like many of my girlfriends), this book is a good way to laugh at yourself. Even if you never looked for a partner you know someone who has offered you the perfect advice for finding a mate. I took the book to work and everyone enjoyed it and subsequently shared stories from their own experiences. Even the men loved it! They said it was fun to see us poke fun at ourselves.

I liked it! Nice short that delivers

I've always been a fan of Gennita Low's military hero books. The only bad things about this novella was the fact its too short and the cheesy title. The story is a fast read that covers a rescue, so you are starting in the middle of a relationship, so there's no real character development, what you have is a snapshot of a story line, and I think its very well done. If you haven't had a chance to pick up one of Gennita Low's full length novels, go for it- I've never read anything bad from this author, This is just a snippet if her writing style.

About the Author

Lisa L. Weyandt, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her work with ADHD and executive functions. Dr. Weyandt is particularly interested in the assessment and treatment of ADHD  in college students including pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions, and clinical neuroscience. She is the author of An ADHD Primer and The Physiological Bases of Cognitive and Behavior Disorders and has published numerous articles and book chapters concerning ADHD.

George J. DuPaul, Ph.D., is Professor of School Psychology and Chairperson of the Department of Education and Human Services at Lehigh University. He has extensive experience providing clinical services to children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their families as well as consulting with a variety of school districts regarding the management of students with ADHD.  He has been an author or co-author on more than 180 journal articles and book chapters related to ADHD.  He has published seven books and two videos on the assessment and treatment of ADHD. Currently, he is investigating the effects of early intervention and school-based interventions for students with ADHD as well as the assessment and treatment of college students with ADHD.

I highly recommend Lisa Weyandt and George DuPaul's book about college students with ADHD. It is very well written, clear, concise, accessible for a range of readers and a pleasure to read. Everyone who interacts with or works with college students with ADHD should read it: parents and other relatives, professors, college campus staff, and both undergrad and grad students.

printing problem

there was a printing problem with this book. Every even-numbered page can be read. Every odd-numbered page is too light to read. Thus although I initially purchased the paperback, it was useless (unless you can read only every other page). So I had to buy the kindle version as well.

So This Is Christmas

This seasonal book consists of two short stories set in Appalachia. Written with a level of poignancy you can only know if you hail from such mountains, T. W. McNemar has a fine way with words, weaving them into worthy tales. McNemar is a relatively new author; only one other book can be found with his name but I'll be looking for anything he publishes in the future.

When I started this collection I wasn't sure what to expect.
I was anticipating raw war stories. Instead, I found stories about men who had been changed by war. But more than that, the stories were about boys maturing into men and handling life the best they knew how.
The story I liked best was titled, Christmas Out, about a young woman who finds her veteran father after believing him dead all her growing up years. Lovely way to end this collection.
These stories are well worth reading. Memorable characters, fine-tuned stories, and beautiful mountain settings.

So This is Christmas

I just finished SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS and I really loved it. Talk about understanding the dictum that "every story is two stories." McNemar nailed it, weaving pivotal moments in characters' earlier lives with the fallout in their present lives. I was anxious as hell (that's a GOOD thing), since I never knew if a character was going to murder or be murdered, or dispense or receive a giant gift of grace. Bravo!
