Confederate Union, by Alan Sewell

In the election of 1860 the Democrats stay united. They elect the pro-slavery ticket of Stephen Douglas and Jefferson Davis.

In 1861 Abraham Lincoln leads the Secession of the North.

CONFEDERATE UNION is the ULTIMATE alternative history of the Civil War

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better-- This is a most valuable, -- a most sacred right -- a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

- Abraham Lincoln

“It needs the united power, harmonious action and concentrated will of the people of all these States to roll the wheel of progress to the end which our fathers contemplated, and which their sons, if they are wise and true, may behold. This great country will remain united.”

- Jefferson Davis

Alternative Civil War Times
By Vincent P.
In the Spring of 1860 the proslavery Democratic Party held it's national convention in Charleston, South Carolina. With hindsight of history the location proved to be an omen of things to come. Less then a year later South Carolina would be the first state to secede from the Union. At the convention, the Party disintegrated into three factions over the Party platform. Each faction split off and nominated their own candidate for President. This split the Democratic Party voters three ways and allowed the smaller antislavery Republican Party to win the election even though Abraham Lincoln only received 40% of the popular vote. What followed was the secession of the Southern States and four bloody years of Civil War.
That's what history tells us.

But, what would have happened if the Democrats had kept their act together and united behind a single moderate candidate like Steven Douglas? This is what Alan Sewell addresses in his alternative history, "Confederate Union." He assumes the same voting patterns which would make Steven Douglas our 16th President. In his timeline, in short order, President Douglas has to deal with events that will eventually lead to the Northern Free States seceding from the Union. The book ends with Steven Douglas' death from typhoid in summer of 1861 and the secession of his Vice-President, Robert E Lee. Abraham Lincoln leading the United Free States in their New War of Independence. Did I mention that this book is volume one of a series?

I have a BS in Social Studies and have studied the political, social and economic environment that spawned the American Civil War. As I read this book it became obvious that Sewell did his homework. Every historical character behaves just as I would expect them and events unfold in such a way that they are totally believable. Sewell weaves actual events in with those of his own creation in such a way that readers that don't have a firm grasp of history will have trouble distinguishing what really happened and what is fantasy. Even though this is an "alternative history" you will come away with a better understanding of the attitudes and mindsets of those people that lived this time period. Those that are familiar with Harry Turtledove's works will not be disappointed when reading this book.

I borrowed this book from Amazon Prime, but I will be pre-ordering volume two as soon as it's available.

Great Book

Confederate Union: This book presents on awesome twist on the civil war as we know it. It is well written and focuses on the main political figures. For civil war and alternate history buffs I would highly recommend it. It is the first in a series and ends on something of a cliff hanger.

I Kept Reading
By Janet K. Schwartzkopf
Alternate histories are a personal favorite of mine, and combined with my interest in the American Civil War, this is really a natural. And, for the most part, I have to say I think Alan Sewell has done a good job coming up with a plausible alternative to splitting this country over the issue of slavery centered around the 1860 election -- with a couple long reaches along the way.

Certainly the biggest stretch is believing that Stephen A. Douglas and Jefferson Davis could have held their political party together going into the 1860 election. If they could have, however, it's very possible that Abraham Lincoln would have been defeated. If you buy that, then the flow of this narrative makes a great deal of sense, and is also, for the most part, well done. In fact, Sewell is able to incorporate a number of minor figures who really existed into his story -- Elmer Ellsworth for example -- without changing the ultimate outcomes of their lives.

Other than taking that great leap of faith with Douglas and Davis, I do wish the author would have gone into a bit more explanation of how George McClellan ended up as the administration's secretary of war, as well as the impact Douglas' death had on the divided country. And, his Mary Todd Lincoln is certainly a more relaxed and gracious wife and hostess than anything fact-based that I've read. Those discordant notes aside, however, I've kept reading and I'm looking forward to the final volume in this trilogy later this year.
