Finally some intelligent words

This was a book I had to read twice. The first time I wasn't sure it wasn't just going to be another shirt-tail-riding-50-shades-book, but it was not. It actually stands on its own two legs and screams out a lot of my personal frustration. It takes some of my objections about this Shady Business seriously.
This passage sums it up for me:
"Ethically, at a general level, one could say that without Twilight itself, however flawed it may be, and without the Twilight fandom, there would have been no Master of the Universe [.]...so seeing James flourish through media articles commonly disparaging fanfic, and repeatedly failing in interview to acknowledge any of her debts, is depressing and unpleasant."
If you wonder where 50 Shades came from, or why a lot (A LOT) of us are b*tching about pull2publish, read this book. It is deeply intelligent, with well researched data, put together in a not-too-long exposé. Finally someone who sees the damage it has done to the fandom and community.
It goes from Fifty, through feminism and (real) bdsm, all the way around to coming back to Fifty, tearing it apart.
'Nuff said. Just read it.

Informative and well-written

This is all the stuff the news media *should* be talking about and isn't. This is the backstory behind all the furor, and why it's important. Lennard covers a lot of ground, but it's well-written and easy to read. You don't need to know anything going in about _Fifty Shades_, fanfic, or BDSM (and not much about feministm, either), because it's written precisely to help people completely outside these groups see the issues involved. If you do know about these subjects, it will still be an insightful analysis.

What's wrong with 50Shades?

Plenty. John Lenard understands the world where 50 Shades started as fan fiction of the Twilight series before EL James "filed the serial numbers off", repackaged, and rebranded, published, and very successfully marketed a copy of "master of the Universe" (89% identical) while misusing basic precepts of the feminism and BDSM community. Mr. Lennard gives each transgression of the author it's due with the most emphasis placed on the fan fiction aspects, which are explored quite thoroughly.
